What is Degoogled Apps OS?
Degoogled Apps OS is an experimental operating system project built around a Scratch-based userland.
The main interface and applications are created using PenguinMod, while Buildroot provides the Linux system underneath them.
How It Started
Degoogled Apps OS began as a Scratch project rather than a conventional Linux distribution.
The idea was to create an operating-system-like environment where the desktop, applications, settings, and games could all be created as part of one project.
The project later expanded toward becoming a real bootable Linux system using Buildroot.
The Userland
Instead of using a traditional desktop environment such as GNOME, KDE Plasma, or XFCE, Degoogled Apps OS uses its own Scratch-based interface.
The userland contains the desktop interface and applications designed specifically for the project.
The goal is to make the interface feel like an operating system rather than simply a website running inside Linux.
Technology
The current planned architecture is:
UEFI →
Linux →
Buildroot →
Wayland →
Cog / WPE WebKit →
PenguinMod HTML
Buildroot is responsible for creating the small Linux environment and the required software components.
The web runtime provides the environment needed to run the packaged PenguinMod application locally.
Current Status
● In development
Degoogled Apps OS is currently an experimental project. The bootable Linux system is being built with Buildroot, while the user interface continues to be developed.
A web-based prototype is also available for testing the interface before the full operating system is ready.
Project Goal
The goal of Degoogled Apps OS is to experiment with what happens when an operating system's graphical environment is designed as one unified Scratch-based project.
It is not intended to be another Ubuntu, Fedora, or conventional desktop Linux distribution. The project has its own interface, applications, and design direction.
